NIR Laser Light Therapy for Pain Relief

Light therapeutic system using Sheaumann lasers in use at the Tokyo Olympics

NIR laser light therapy is a highly effective treatment for all-over wellness, and for treating both acute injuries, chronic pain conditions as well as post-activity recovery. It is also used as a tool to prolong the need for some surgeries, as well as pre-and post-surgery treatment to help control pain and swelling.

To receive the best therapeutic outcomes from laser therapy, a sufficient amount of light must reach the target tissue. Factors that maximize reaching target tissue include: light wavelength, reducing reflections, minimizing unwanted absorption, and power.

There is a multitude of different injuries that require different wavelengths and powers. A sprained shoulder, herniated disc, lower back pain, and arthritis in the hand, for example, may require slightly different treatments to achieve pain relief. The therapeutic window of light where the effects of the laser are ideal is approximately 650 – 1100nm. The wavelength defines which bio-molecular path will trigger a biological response. Power, on the other hand, is kept within a safe range so as to not damage tissue. Within this safe range, upping the power can reduce therapy time.

Because of NIR light’s deeper absorption into the body, it can penetrate bones, joints, large muscles, and tissues. NIR Light therapy encourages cellular repair and regeneration by increasing cellular metabolism, which can slow or even halt the inflammatory response and give the body a chance to repair itself.

How it works – Near-infrared light therapy
Laser therapy works by stimulating a process called photobiomodulation (PBM) in which photons enter the tissue and interact with the Cytochrome C complex within mitochondria. Invisible near-infrared energy is absorbed by photoreceptors in each cell. Once absorbed, the light energy kicks off a whole series of metabolic events, stimulating the body’s natural processes on a cellular level.

There is an increase in blood flow, allowing the parts of the body to receive the oxygen and nutrients they need in order to function more effectively. Regeneration is stimulated. Inflammation and pain are reduced.

Looking to bring your NIR laser light therapy device to market? Sheaumann is a manufacturer of laser diodes in the 780-1070nm range, including the most common wavelengths for NIR laser light therapy: 808, 852, 980, and 1064nm. Our quality management system has achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification, and our products comply with RoHS 3 and REACH requirements.
